Amazon affiliate for creators: how it actually works

By Danielle · 6 min read

Amazon Associates is the easiest affiliate program to get into and the easiest one to quit too early. Here’s how it really works.

Almost everyone already shops on Amazon. That’s the whole advantage. You’re not convincing someone to trust a brand they’ve never heard of — you’re just handing them a link to a store they already have an account with and a card already saved.

Think of it like this. Most affiliate programs are like recommending a restaurant across town. Amazon is recommending the kitchen someone already cooks in.

What you actually get paid

Amazon pays a percentage of the sale, and that percentage changes by category. Beauty and luxury beauty pay well. Electronics pay very little. Gift cards usually pay nothing at all.

The part nobody explains: you earn on the whole cart, not just your product. Someone clicks your $12 lip liner link, wanders off, and buys a $400 vacuum in the same session — you get credit for the vacuum too. That 24-hour window is where the real money hides.

Low percentage, huge volume, and credit for whatever else lands in the cart. That’s the whole business model.

Getting approved (and staying approved)

Applying takes about ten minutes. Staying in is the part people fumble.

You must make 3 qualifying sales in your first 180 days. Not 3 clicks. Three actual purchases. If you don’t, Amazon closes your account and you have to reapply. This is the single most common way creators lose the program.

So don’t apply the day you decide to try affiliate marketing. Apply the week you’re actually ready to post. Those 180 days start the moment you’re approved, whether you use them or not.

Where the links go

Amazon links don’t work everywhere, and the rules are stricter than people assume.

Allowed: your website, your blog, your email list — if you declared them when you applied.
Not allowed: pasting raw affiliate links into email or DMs, or using them in anything offline like a PDF you sell.
Careful: you have to disclose the relationship, and you can’t state a price in your content, because Amazon prices change constantly.

The workaround most creators use is simple: build a free landing page or a link-in-bio page, put the links there, and send everything to that one page. Then your DMs and captions point at a page, not a raw link.

The Amazon storefront

If you’re in the Amazon Influencer Program — a separate application that looks at your social accounts — you get a storefront: a page with your own URL where you build shoppable lists.

This is the version most creators should want. You make one list called “my apartment” or “everything in my camera bag,” and it keeps earning for years. You film a video once. The list stays up forever.

What to actually post

The content that converts on Amazon is boring, and that’s the point. Nobody is inspired into an Amazon purchase. They’re solved into one.

1. Problem-first. “My shower had no storage” beats “Amazon must-haves.”
2. Show it working. In your actual space, not a flat lay.
3. Be specific about who it’s for. “If you rent and can’t drill holes” sells more than “you need this.”
4. One product per video. Roundups get views. Single products get sales.
5. Send them to one place. Your storefront or a page, every single time.

Heads up: some links in my content are affiliate links. If you buy through one, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only share what I actually use.

How long it takes

Your first commission will probably be under a dollar. That’s normal and it is not a sign it isn’t working. Amazon is a volume game — the creators earning real money from it have dozens of pieces of content quietly sending clicks every day, most of them made months ago.

If you want money faster, Amazon isn’t the lever. A paid UGC deal pays hundreds at once. Amazon pays pennies that compound. You want both eventually, but start with whichever one matches how much time you can give it.
