UGC vs affiliate vs TikTok Shop: what’s the difference?

By Danielle · 6 min read

If these three words blur together in your head, you're not alone — almost every beginner mixes them up. Here's the simple version, so you finally know exactly what you're doing (and getting paid for).

UGC = you get paid to create

UGC stands for user-generated content. Brands pay you a flat fee to make phone-shot videos they can use in their own ads and posts. The key part: you're paid for the content itself. You don't need followers, and it doesn't matter whether anyone buys anything — you deliver the video, you get paid.

Think of it like: being a tiny content studio for brands. They hire you to make the video; what they do with it is their job, not yours.

Affiliate = you get paid when people buy

Affiliate marketing is different: you share a special link or code, and when someone buys through it, you earn a commission (a percentage of the sale). There's no flat fee — your income depends on how many people actually purchase.

Think of it like: recommending something you love to a friend — but with a link that pays you a cut every time someone buys.

TikTok Shop = a place to do affiliate

Here's where people get tangled. TikTok Shop isn't a separate business model — it's a specific platform where you can do affiliate marketing. You tag products right inside your TikTok videos, and when someone buys, you earn commission. It's one of the easiest places to start because the audience is right there, ready to shop — and it works beautifully faceless (hands-only demos, voiceovers, and B-roll).

UGC pays you for the content. Affiliate pays you for the sale. TikTok Shop is just one of the best places to earn that affiliate income.

So which should you start with?

Most creators don't pick just one — they stack them, in this order:

1. Start with UGC. It pays you fastest and doesn't depend on sales, so it's the most reliable way to earn early — even from zero followers.

2. Add affiliate. Once you're making content anyway, drop affiliate links for products you already use. It's income on top of what you're doing.

3. Layer in TikTok Shop. Tag products in your videos for commission that can keep paying long after you post — a great faceless option.

You don't have to do all three today. Pick UGC to get your first paid deal, and let the rest grow from there.

Honesty note: how much you earn from any of these depends on your effort, niche, and consistency. There are no guarantees — this is education, not a promise of income.
